Sebastián Yancovic Pakarati joins the Council of Fondo Naturaleza Chile (Chile Nature Fund)
We welcome Sebastián Yankovic, an expert in Rapa Nui's Natural Heritage and a specialist in birds of the Eastern Pacific, to the Council of the Chile Nature Fund.
Sebastián Yancovic Pakarati is a member of the Rapa Nui community in Polynesia. He holds a master's degree in Protected Natural Areas. He is a member of the Chilean committee of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). For 12 years, he served on the Rapa Nui National Monuments Advisory Council (CAMN), representing the institution on the committee overseeing the construction of the new museum. He has 16 years of experience leading marine and terrestrial conservation efforts, including his work in Melimoyu in Northern Patagonia and his participation in the Ma'u Henua proposals (which enabled the Rapa Nui community to assume management of 43% of the territory through Rapa Nui National Park).
Since 2014, he has worked to promote the creation of the Rapa Nui Marine Protected Area (MPA), successfully achieving this in 2018 after a favorable indigenous consultation. In 2022, he was elected—for a four-year term—as the Rapa Nui people's representative for the administration of the MPA system—Koro Nui o te Vaikava —which includes the Motu Motiro Hiva Marine Park, the Rapa Nui Multiple-Use Coastal Marine Protected Area, the Nature Sanctuaries, and the Motu Tautara, Coral Nui Nui, and Hanga o Teo Underwater Parks.
She has published several scientific articles on various topics related to her island. She is currently writing the second edition of her book, "Birds of Rapa Nui ," and supporting the coordination of Koro Nui o te Vaikava to strengthen the national proposal of the BBNJ secretariat and the cultural chapter for the creation of one of the first offshore marine protected areas, named Salas & Gómez and Nazca Ridges: Honga'a o te Moana Nui.
