Allies for Nature: Chile launched a long-term financing platform for biodiversity at COP 17

Chile is promoting an ambitious vision to secure long-term funding for biodiversity conservation, through the creation of a national heritage fund for protected areas and their natural heritage.
As part of these actions, today at the GEF pavilion at COP17 CBD in Armenia, the event "Partners for Nature: Launching Chile's Long-Term Biodiversity Financing Platform" was held with the participation of the Minister of the Environment of Chile, Francisca Toledo; the President of the Mexican Fund for Nature Conservation and of the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds, RedLAC, Renée González Montagut ; the Executive Director and President of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Diego Mesa Puyo; the Head of the Biodiversity and Natural Capital Unit of the IDB, Gregory Watson; and the National Director of the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service of Chile, Tomás Saratscheff.
At this high-level meeting, the prioritization of the allocation of the ninth GEF cycle as catalytic capital was announced to facilitate the establishment of the fund and mobilize additional contributions from public, private and philanthropic partners.
It was a collaborative event between the Ministry of Environment, representatives of the GEF, the RedLAC environmental funds network, Fondo Naturaleza Chile and the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service of Chile, along with prominent leaders from the government sector, philanthropic organizations, conservation funding institutions, as well as multilateral partners and development agencies.
