We welcome Ricardo Lagos Weber, lawyer, former Senator of the Republic of Chile, expert in economic diplomacy and ocean conservation, as a member of the Council of Fondo Naturaleza Chile.

Ricardo Lagos Weber is a lawyer from the University of Chile, with postgraduate studies in Economic Development from the University of Sussex (MPhil). He began his international career at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, working on structural adjustment policies and the informal sector, and later at the ILO office in Chile on issues of demography and the labor market. He dedicated a significant part of his career to Chile's international economic integration, actively participating in the negotiation of free trade agreements and in multilateral forums such as the WTO and APEC. In this capacity, he led the FTA negotiations with the United States and participated in negotiations with the European Union, China, India, and the P4 countries, the precursor to the TPP.

Between 2006 and 2007, he served as Minister Secretary General of Government under President Michelle Bachelet. He was a Senator for the Valparaíso Region for two consecutive terms (2010–2026), serving as President of the Senate (2016–2017) and Vice President (2025–2026). During his legislative tenure, he promoted initiatives related to marine conservation, the protection of ocean ecosystems, and climate change, solidifying a sustained commitment to the environmental agenda.

Currently, his work focuses on international ocean governance, with special emphasis on the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement —the first legally binding international treaty for the protection of the high seas and marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction—, the work of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), and the establishment of marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean and Chilean jurisdictional waters.
